THE fishing season got off to a good start over the long weekend thanks to the conditions and good stocking of the waterways in the area.
Murray Ogilvie from High Country Outfitters runs fly fishing courses and reported on the success of the weekend's fishing.
"Apart from the overnight rain on Friday night bringing the river up it was still a very successful start to the season," he said.
"With the river so high the conditions were a bit tough but a lot of fish were caught below the hatchery all the way to the bridge."
Apparently the lake fishing was as good if not better than river fishing.
"Got good reports from lake fishing as well as fishing on the river, so it was a great start to the opening of the season."
Not only that but the rest of the season looks to be as promising.
"It should continue to fish really well because of snowmelts and low water temperatures that fish like."
The temperature of the water added to the success of the opening weekend, as well as water levels being ideal for spawning browns and rainbows.
Ogilvie said the people responsible for stocking the lake with fish also played a big role in the good start to fishing season.
"The fisheries department and the people who stock the lake with fish do a good job, they've really got it down pat with the numbers of fish each year."
The opening season saw not only serious fishermen but also families really enjoying themselves because of the number of fish there to be caught.
And things are only looking up.
"Walking around I saw a lot of decomposed granite had been washed out of the river up the sides, which means the stony bottom is being revealed again, which is much better for fish and insect life.
"It promises to be a really great spring of fishing, and summer, if the water temperature stays low."
