Woolies staff chop it off for charity

9/10/2008 10:44:00 AM
STAFF from Jindabyne Woolies lost their locks on Tuesday and raised more than $600 as part of the national Fresh Food Kids Hospital Appeal.

Staff raffles and a mufti day added another $163 to the total.

The money raised will go to the Westmead Children's Hospital and other children's facilities in hospitals around NSW.

Before the staff members bid farewell to their hair, the fundraising stood at $528, not bad for a week's effort, but by the time the barber and waxers were through, the total had jumped to $600, thanks to generous onlookers.

And they got some entertainment for their donation.

Four brave men allowed female staff members, including partners, to wax their legs and the women seemed to enjoy it.

Produce manager Rob Rogers, liquor manager Kristiaan Dehne, perishable manager Steve O'Donnell and staff member Jack Cake lined up to lose their leg hair.

Parting with their tresses were meat manager Matt Clarke and back dock person Steve Hodge and plenty of passers by in the Nuggets Crossing courtyard stopped to enjoy the show.

"It's going to be a bit chilly in the mornings," Mr Clarke said.

"And a bit fresh in the cool room, but it's all for a good cause," he said.

The pain and discomfort experienced by the volunteers pales in comparison to anything experienced by children in hospitals around the country and the staff members kept this in mind during the wax and shave process.

All staff who took part in the waxing and shaving did so voluntarily, apparently no coercion was needed.

Back dock person Steve Hodge was first off the rank to have his head shaved and seemed to enjoy a heckling from the crowd including taunts that he would need sunscreen on his newly bald head.

"I'm just thankful I didn't do it this morning when there was a frost around," Mr Hodge replied.

Andy Bicanic from the Shearing Shed volunteered his time to shave the heads and faces of willing Woolies staff.

Relief store manager Jason Eyles lost his beard and moustache for the cause and thanked all customers and businesses for their contribution to the fundraiser.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
