 Catching them young

Catching them young

20/11/2008 4:27:00 PM
It was at one of Gaden's recent youth workshop sessions that 12 year old Jordan Lewis from Jindabyne really got hooked on fishing.

He already had an interest but the course in October really made the difference.

Mum, Dawn Lewis, said: "He did the course and as a result of that became so interested that we all had to get up at 4.30 one morning to go fishing. He even inspired his older brother too."

Mrs Lewis was enjoying some time on the banks of the Thredbo River on Sunday morning while Jordan was thigh deep in the river hoping for a bite.

"City kids would never have an opportunity to do something like this, we're very lucky here," Mrs Lewis said.

But Jordan's passion didn't stop at the river's edge, he insisted that his mum came along to the protest rally on Sunday morning too.

The youth workshops run by Gaden staff aim to teach some basics of fly fishing, bag limits and about Gaden's role in ensuring a good supply of disease free fish.

The workshop in October was heavily over-subscribed and the overflow was put into a workshop last Saturday which very quickly filled up.

There is expected to be another youth workshop which is open for girls and boys, in January.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
